Broadway composer Drew Gasparini returns for one-night-only concert with York Drama performers

York Drama is proud to present its students in concert with renowned Broadway composer Drew Gasparini. The concert will be hosted at the Elmhurst Art Museum on Dec. 6 at 7:30 p.m.; tickets are on sale now and extremely limited. Gasparini will perform songs from his album and accompany students in their performances of his music.

Gasparini first visited Elmhurst in 2015 to work with York Drama, and is looking forward to working with a new group of performers. One of the largest names in contemporary musical theatre, he is currently developing a number of new stage musicals including the Broadway-bound musical adaptation of “The Karate Kid,” as well as “It’s Kind of a Funny Story” and “Night Shift.” This summer, he published his new autobiographical song cycle, “We Aren’t Kids Anymore,” through Concord Theatricals.

“The opportunity to work with such a force in the musical theatre and Broadway community is a truly remarkable experience for our students,” said Rebecca Marianetti, drama director. “Students will walk away with skills for a lifetime of performing, and the concert itself will be a truly spectacular display of dedication and talent.”

York students who were selected to rehearse and perform with Gasparini include Annalise Belzile, Aidan Costanzo, Owen Espinosa, Paige Greve, Luke Hanley, David Izzo, Rosie Kungl, Leo Macariola, Ben Plaisted, Rianna Roberts, Grace Stewart, Kristina Vezmar, and Regan Wright. An ensemble of students will perform a powerful closing number, and selected students will participate in a public master class with Gasparini the afternoon before the concert.

“It’s a big deal to be working with someone at the Broadway level, especially as someone who is hoping to study musical theatre,” Espinosa said. “It means so much to be learning from and performing with a composer whose music speaks so much to me.”

Tickets are immediately available on the York Drama website. Ticket prices are $20, or $15 for students who purchase before Nov. 29. It is highly recommended that tickets be purchased ahead of the event as space is extremely limited.

“I have been singing Gasparini’s songs since middle school, so this is a particularly special ‘full-circle’ moment,” Wright said. “I am so fortunate I go to a high school where opportunities like this are available to me--it’s mind blowing.”
